Social Exchange Theory

I am reading a book at the moment which talks about the above:
"Show interest in other people and a willingness to apply the rules of social exchange theory: rewards should outweigh the costs for a relationship to be stable. So if a person with ASD wants others to listen to them they need to listen to others."
Has anyone ever heard of this?
