Side Development

I know unfortunately of a few people who have already been hit by the econimic downturn and I suspect that it is going to get worse before it gets better.

I am lucky at the moment insofar as I have a new job. However, I am also determined to try and develop myself more going forward.

As a previous posting mentioned I am making an effort to network more. I am trying to set myself a target of meeting a contact informally once every two weeks. Just for a chat, not to ask for anything.

I am trying to think of other things I can do also to built some specific, technical skills.

One of the obvious things that goes through my mind it IT; or, more pertinently, web or internet based stiff which is becoming increasingly important.

I was wondering if anyone was doing anything in this or other areas to try and develop their career/personal skill set?

Further Feedback

Interesting that no one has responded to this posting.

I am working hard on my current responsibilities but with one eye also on the future.

As previously mentioned, I am working my network - have experienced normal setbacks - and am thinking of ways that I can personally develop.

One of the latter is via applying for a senior advancement from my current role. This would be advance on what I am doing now and would be a natural progression.

The other thing I want is to do is develop my skills beyond what I am currently doing.

I think that being proactive and trying to think ahead in this environment is really important - hard as though it is.

Would really be interested/keen to hear about other people's ideas and/or suggestions.

Good for you

Glad to hear that you're doing this, I give you credit. I hope this works out for you and the result will be positive.

Right now I'm not doing anything like this at the moment. I'm just working with the job I have and trying to keep things in my own life in tact (easier said than done).

I do agree that in many fields one has to have a back up plan and be open to explore other options.

Good luck with this.
