Making It a Habit
I have posted many times of the importance of dressing appropriately in a corporate context. I have also commented on the propensity - and importance - for someone with Asperger syndrome of dressing for confort, as opposed to, experience.
The latter is, of course, absolutely vital - and essential. If I have the wrong dress code on, I can find it very uncomfortable and highly irritating. If this does occur then I simply cannot work productively or effectively.
It occured to me the other day however, of the importance of ensuring that the way I dress outside of work is every bit as important as the way I do when I am in a corporate environment. I am not obliged, of course, to dress formally, but it is the importance of taking care over ones appearance - and getting into the habit of doing so - that is key.
As I suspect is the case of many with Asperger syndrome, so long as I am comfortable within myself, I am happy. I don't take to much time or give too much thought of how others perceive me. This, I believe, has been a big mistake.
Now I have made a determined effort to take more care over my appearance whilst at home. I have to admit I do feel better about it. It has also made me more conscious and proactive about how I appear when I go to see clients.
