Expressed Emotion

Another key point that I have just read in Digby Tantum's book Can the World Afford Autistic Spectrum Disorder is about emotional outbursts for someone with ASD or what he describes as "Expressed Emotion".

As most people will know I believe that prevention is better than cure and that, in the workplace, keeping calm and not reacting is absolutely essential.

I can see how looking back, reacting has been the cause of much of the oppresion that I have faced. The following is an extract form the above book:

"One of the most successful interventions is preventing “expressed emotion” (actually, expressed negative emotion) in communication: high expressed emotion in the form of critical comments, emotional demands and hostility".

Never react, remain calm and try to prevent oneself becoming hostile when confronted with unfair criticism are all techiques that I have come to appreciate are necessary.

The quoted section above provides a lot of formal explanation.
