Complete Change

I have often contemplated a complete change of career. Indeed, three years ago I tried to re-train as an Occupational Psychologist, a move which, unfortunately, wasn't sucessful due to the selection of an inappropriate course.

Has anybody successfully undertaken a complete career change?

One of the things I find hardest is actually taking the first step: I am doing the right thing; if it doesn't work out and I try to return to what I was previously doing, will that act against me?

I seem to continually have this thought going through my mind that I do need to change but, taking the plunge is the hardest part of all!

A Complete Change

I never did a complete career change. The place I work for did change my job duties a number of times but that's about it.

I can relate to your concerns. Not knowing whether this is the right thing to do, how to do it, how to approach it, the "what if it doesn't work" situation, where to go or what kind of change exactly needs to be considered.

Occasionally I think about a complete change in my career but I have the same questions, concerns and reservations about it. It's not a easy thing at times. Especially if you're not sure what other career you want to do. I know people who did it. Some were successful, some were not and some are in the same boat like they were in their old career.

Enforced Change

I have undergone a version of this in the form of enforced career change.

My wife always says that, unless I am pushed to do something, chances are I will never make the break.

I am determined to try and make the most of this "enforced change" over the next few months.

If nothing else it will mean I have tried something different and have the chance to acquire new skills and sample a new experience!e

Your New Job

Congratulations with this new career of yours! I hope it goes well for you. From what I read it sounds like things are working out for you. Keep up the good work!
